Tmblrvision 2023 Announcement #2: Country Participation Rulings, Special Guest Country Options, and Winner's Choice
With only two weeks to go until sign-ups for Tmblrvision Song Contest 2023, it's time for a few more announcements, this time regarding participating countries.
As a rule of thumb, all countries which have a broadcaster which is a member of the EBU are eligible to participate in the contest. However, Tmblrvision has introduced a few wrinkles here and there. For example, Australia is (more or less) a permanent participant at Tmblrvision.
The results of the Head of Delegation Survey have helped to determine rulings for other potential participating nations. In addition, at the end, the first official participating nation for Tmblrvision 2023 will be revealed!
Constituent countries of the United Kingdom will continue to participate individually
A large majority voted to continue to allow the constituent countries to participate individually from each other, which means that once again, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and host nation Wales will be eligible to participate at Tmblrvision.
Independent Belarusian Artists and Independent Russian Artists will continue to be eligible
This was also a majority, but slightly less than the UK decision. Just like last year, Independent Belarusian Artists will once again be eligible to participate under the white-red-white flag, while Independent Russian Artists are eligible to participate under the white-blue-white flag.
A slot will be allotted for a Special Guest Country
The results mirror that of the previous question, which means we will once again potentially see a Special Guest Country participating at Tmblrvision!
Special Guest Country options
Once again, the top three options in this poll will be the official options for the Special Guest Country. This year, the three possibilities are Canada, Chile, and New Zealand!
Winner's Choice
As is tradition, last year's winning Head of Delegation has been given the opportunity to select a country ahead of the official sign-ups. This decision has been made, and it's time to reveal which country has been claimed and will be participating in Cardiff!
The country chosen by last year's winner is...

IRELAND!
This means that during sign-ups in two weeks, Ireland can no longer be selected.
Look for more announcements in the days leading up to sign-ups, including the official set of rules as well as the visual identity for Cardiff 2023!

Henny’s thoughts and ranking (sort of) - Tmblrvision 2017
Tmblrvision 2017 is over! and boy have i been waiting to tell y’all about the songs i really really liked this year. it was a really strong year, i highkey wished i would awars at least half of all the songs a point or two. or twenty.
when trying to rank them all, i didn’t really go all the way, i just devided them into five categories; the jury points squad, the televote squad, those who were really good but not good enough, those who were just good but not knocking me off my chair, and those i didn’t really feel anything for at all.
so, the jury points squad:
12 Australia 10 Montenegro 8 Israel 7 Italy 6 Iceland 5 UK 4 Serbia 3 Luxembourg 2 Estonia 1 Armenia
oh how i LOVE all of these songs!!! i submitted my votes early and i had a really hard time deciding who’d get the 12, and now afterwards i realise montenegro is probably the song i’ve listened to the most... but boy australia is good. i found a new love in sheppard, honestly. apart from that, italy, iceland, uk, serbia and armenia are all my personal winners in their respective nf’s, and they aren’t my winners for no reason. israel and luxembourg, well they are just lucky discoveries for me. i’m really happy with the winner of the whole contest. and lastly, estonia is.. well i love jüri. and i love that song. simple as that.
the televote squad: Germany Algeria France Hungary Belgium Monaco Turkey (and the rest were two extra for australia and one extra for montenegro)
i listen to all of these now afterwards, especially turkey and germany. huge kudos to tom and isi for these songs, i love them a lot.
the ones who almost made it:
Albania Austria Norway Denmark Switzerland Slovakia Moldova Czechia Lithuania Azerbaijan Ireland
especially the top three, i really wish there were more more votes, you would have got them. to everyone in this list: i’m genuinly sorry.
and the rest of the songs i’m not gonna post, i don’t want to people to find out they were in my bottom and for them to be dissapointed. and for the love of god, (i don’t think anyone actually thinks this but) just because i don’t like the song doesn’t mean i don’t like the hod. you are all pearls and stars and i adore you. i’m so thankful to be in this with all of you. i really hope i can be a part of the contest next year again, if there’ll be one, and represent sweden again, showing even more good songs to the world. it’s what they deserve.
until then, lots of hugs from me, sweden’s hod 💞🇸🇪

Tmblrvision 2020 Head of Delegation Intentions Survey RESULTS!
I asked you to fill in a survey to gauge how many people were interested in joining Tmblrvision, as well as determine which countries potential Heads of Delegation were going for. This year, 35 of you filled out the survey.
In 2018, 53 people responded to the survey, ultimately receiving 52 entries. Last year, 40 people responded to the survey, ultimately receiving 43 entries. If I set the range to ±3, I am anticipating between 32 to 38 entries to Tmblrvision this year!
As expected, the majority of those thinking of participating this year have participated in previous years. The number of potential debuts is the smallest it has been (down from 16 in 2018 and 5 in 2019) but it’s still nice to see that newcomers want to participate!
Top 12 Most Wanted Countries
These are the twelve countries that at least 20% of respondents are interested in. As it did in 2018, Italy tops the list with 11 out of 35 having some intention of claiming it, unsurprising as it is one of the countries that tends to do well in Tmblrvision. Sweden, United Kingdom, Ireland, Ukraine, Australia, Belgium, France, and Norway continue to be popular picks as they have been in the past couple of years. Meanwhile, Russia is experiencing a resurgence after being less sought-after last year (even moving up to share the 2nd spot with Sweden and the UK), as is Finland, while Estonia is a relatively popular pick for the second year running.
Other Popular Countries
18 countries had 3 to 6 users interested in them, including last year’s winner and this year’s host Netherlands as well as the Special Guest Country, which can be one of either Brazil, Kazakhstan, or New Zealand. Spain seems to have fallen a bit out of favor compared to last year, while interest in Latvia is higher than in previous years. It’s nice to see Serbia have people interested in it again, and while this is a good sign that Turkey might be making a return this year, last year four people marked it as one of their potential choices and in the end it remained unclaimed.
Less-Wanted Countries
Going down the list, we unsurprisingly see a lot of MENA countries (for example, Israel), Caucasus nations (Armenia and Georgia), the Balkans (for example, Albania and Croatia), and micronations (such as Monaco). One previous winning country, Algeria, is also surprisingly unpopular, though MENA countries tend to be unpopular picks. It’s also nice to see countries absent in previous years show up on this list, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jordan, Montenegro, Morocco, North Macedonia, San Marino, and Tunisia.
Unwanted Countries
The good news is, if you’re looking for a Plan B (or Plan C or D or even E), then these nine countries currently don’t have anyone going for them. The bad news is, well, nobody’s going for these nine countries. Rather surprisingly, one previous winning country can be found on this list: Slovenia. Most of the other countries here were also left unclaimed last year, so it’s possible that we won’t be seeing these countries return: Andorra, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Libya, and Malta. Rounding out the “unwanted” list are one Balkan country, Bulgaria, and two MENA countries, Egypt and Lebanon.
Country sign-ups are currently scheduled for 11 July 2020!
A time has not yet been set but we’ll keep you informed as necessary. This should give you at least a month to figure out your plans... and quickly change them as soon as last year’s winning HoD informs us which country they’re claiming!

Tmblrvision 2019 Head of Delegation Intentions Survey RESULTS!
A couple of weeks ago I asked you to fill in a survey if you were interested in becoming a Head of Delegation for Tmblrvision 2019, as well as signal your interest in which countries you were thinking of going for. 40 of you responded to the survey, and for that, I thank you!
Last year I received 53 survey responses, a total of 56 sign-ups (excluding the automatic qualifier, so in all 57 interested players), and ended with 52 entries, so this year I’m expecting approximately 40 players, the lowest total since the start of Tmblrvision but, y’know, still a lot. (Looking on the bright side, it might be easier to claim the country you like!)
35 of you who have participated in at least one of the previous three years completed the survey, and there are 5 who may be making their Tmblrvision debut in this edition!
Now, let’s see which countries y’all are planning to go for.
Top 24 Most-Wanted Countries
Okay, so that heading is a bit of a misnomer, as included on this list are the 7 people who don’t quite know which country to go for. (Hopefully the results of this survey help in your decision!) Also a whopping 17 of you are thinking of going for one of the three options for Special Guest Country: Japan, Kazakhstan, or Kosovo. Remember that only one of these countries can be claimed, and unless they are invited to Eurovision, they will not be eligible to compete in the next two years.
The United Kingdom tops this list for a second year in a row (in terms of single countries, as I don’t know the breakdown of the 17 votes for Special Guest Country). This is also unsurprising as the United Kingdom was also the country which was listed as the top option by the most potential HoDs last year (6, a total of 10.5% of all sign-ups last year). France and Norway, which were also popular responses to the survey last year, show up in the Top 5 again, and while Italy no longer shares the top spot with the UK, it’s still one of the more popular countries. The list tends towards Western Europe (UK, France, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland) and Northern Europe (Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Estonia, Denmark), which isn’t too surprising. Countries with large music scenes such as Australia, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, and Turkey also turn up here. Personally, seeing Albania here is a bit of a surprise, but artists like Ava Max probably contribute to that.
If you’re going for any of these countries, you gotta be quick! And maybe do a bit of research for Plan B countries.
The Less-Wanted Countries
Here are the countries that didn’t get quite as much love as the ones above. The list includes last year’s winning country Algeria, which isn’t too surprising as MENA (Middle East and Northern Africa) countries tend to be unpopular in these contests. Indeed, this list is full of them: Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon are all rather unpopular picks. The list also tends towards Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans (Austria, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechia, Slovenia, Armenia, Croatia, North Macedonia, Moldova). Surprises include Greece and Finland (which seems to be the least popular amongst the Nordics). The Baltics with the exception of Estonia also seem more niche.
The Unwanted
Here are the countries that nobody picked as any of their choices. (If you’re looking for a country to put as your fourth or fifth choice, or if you’re struggling to figure out what country to go for, here’s a good place to look. For many of these countries, the Discord server has song suggestions.)
Unsurprisingly, micronations don’t tend to be popular, with Andorra and (admittedly unsurprisingly) Vatican getting 0 “votes” and Monaco, San Marino, and Luxembourg getting picked only 1 or 2 times. MENA (Libya, Tunisia) and the Balkans (Bulgaria, Montenegro, Serbia) also show up here. Also, Tamta won’t be too happy to see both Cyprus and Georgia unloved. Slovakia and Malta round off this list.
Don’t forget that country sign-ups are on 20 July 2019 at 4pm CEST! This means you have three weeks to figure out your plans and maybe do a bit more research for Plan B, C, D, and E. (Reminder that you’re required to name five countries when signing up!)
Oh, and before I forget, there’s one country that you can no longer claim, as last year’s winning HoD @duskadawn has made their selection. The country that has already been claimed is....
UNITED KINGDOM
So to the many who were thinking of going for the United Kingdom.... time to think again. Maybe one of the countries that didn’t get picked?
